PINPOINT TEST I : Incorrect or Erratic Direction of Airflow From Outlets

NOTE: Access to the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator motor connector in this pinpoint test is difficult. Before disconnecting the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator motor connector, visually inspect the actuator and its harness for obvious damage. If no damage is evident, proceed with the test.

  1. I1 CHECK THE HVAC MODULE FOR DTCs

    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, perform a HVAC module self-test.

    Are any DTCs present? 

    Yes  For DTC B1086:11, GO to  I3. For DTC B1086:12, GO to  I4. For DTC B1086:13, GO to  I6. For DTC B11E7:11, GO to  I7. For DTC B11E7:15, GO to  I9.
    No  GO to  I2.
  2. I2 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR OPERATION USING ACTIVE COMMANDS

    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, view HVAC module PIDs.
    • Monitor the HVAC module PID AIR_MODE_DPOS.
    • Select panel mode.
    • Select the highest blower motor setting.
    • Observe airflow while using the scan tool to operate the HVAC module active command AIR_MODE_DPOS, increasing and decreasing the percentage value.

    Does the airflow change between the defrost, panel and floor outlets when the active command is changed? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new FCIM. For Premium, REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Premium . For Premium Plus, REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Premium Plus . For Sony Sound, REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Sony Sound .
    No  INSPECT for broken linkage or door. REPAIR as necessary. If no condition is found, GO to  I14.
  3. I3 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I5.
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  4. I4 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit in question.
    No  GO to  I5.
  5. I5 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I14.
    No  REPAIR the circuits.
  6. I6 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR MOTOR CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Are the resistances less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit in question.
  7. I7 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I8.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  8. I8 CHECK THE SIGNAL RETURN CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I14.
    No  REPAIR the circuits.
  9. I9 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Disconnect: Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  I10.
  10. I10 CHECK THE REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I11.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. I11 CHECK THE REFERENCE VOLTAGE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Measure:

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I12.
    No  REPAIR the circuits.
  12. I12 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR FEEDBACK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I13.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  13. I13 CHECK THE DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR RETURN CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  I14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  14. I14 CHECK FOR CORRECT DEFROST/PANEL/FLOOR MODE DOOR ACTUATOR OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator connector.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the defrost/panel/floor mode door actuator connector. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Clear the DTCs.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new Defrost/Panel/Floor Mode Door Actuator, REFER to Climate Control - DATC . TEST the system for normal operation. If the concern is still present, GO to  I15.
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  15. I15 MODULE ACTUATOR POSITION CALIBRATION

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all HVAC module connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Clear the DTCs.
    • Using a scan tool, perform HVAC Module self-test.
    • Select any position except OFF.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. Refer to Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) Module .
    No  The system is now operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a foreign object in the HVAC case or temporary binding that restricted actuator door travel. CHECK any actuator external linkage. If condition recurs, INSPECT actuator linkage and door for binding and CHECK HVAC case for foreign objects.
