PINPOINT TEST O : The Blower Motor Is Inoperative

  1. O1 CHECK THE HVAC MODULE FOR DTCs

    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a scan tool, perform a HVAC module self-test.

    Are any DTCs present? 

    Yes  For DTC B10AF:12, GO to  O2. For DTC B10AF:13, GO to  O4. For DTC B10B9:14, GO to  O8.
    No  GO to  O7.
  2. O2 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY FUNCTIONALITY

    • Install a known good blower motor relay.

    Does the blower motor function correctly? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new blower motor relay.
    No  GO to  O3.
  3. O3 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Blower Motor Relay.
    • Disconnect: HVAC module C228A.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead
      Blower Motor Relay Socket Pin 1

      Ground

    Is any voltage present? 

    Yes  REPAIR the circuit.
    No  GO to  O17.
  4. O4 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY FUNCTIONALITY

    • Install a known good blower motor relay.

    Does the blower motor function correctly? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new blower motor relay.
    No  GO to  O5.
  5. O5 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY COIL SUPPLY VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Blower Motor Relay.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  O6.
    No  VERIFY BJB fuse 89 (5A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  6. O6 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY COIL CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement. Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  O17.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  7. O7 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR OPERATION USING ACTIVE COMMANDS

    • Using a scan tool, view HVAC Module PIDs.
    • Select PANEL mode on the HVAC controls.
    • Select the lowest blower motor setting.
    • Monitor blower motor speed while using the scan tool to operate the active command PID BLOWRSPD, increasing and decreasing the percentage value.

    Does the blower motor speed change between low and high when the active command is changed? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new FCIM. For Premium, REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Premium . For Premium Plus, REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Premium Plus . For Sony® Sound, REFER to Information and Entertainment Systems - Sony Sound .
    No  GO to  O8.
  8. O8 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY FUNCTIONALITY

    • Install a known good blower motor relay.

    Does the blower motor function correctly? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new blower motor relay.
    No  GO to  O9.
  9. O9 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY SWITCH CONTACT

    • Disconnect: Blower Motor Relay
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  GO to  O10.
    No  VERIFY BJB fuse 18 (40A) is OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit. If not OK, REFER to the SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article to identify the possible causes of the circuit short.
  10. O10 CHECK VOLTAGE TO THE BLOWER MOTOR WITH THE BLOWER MOTOR RELAY BYPASSED

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Blower Motor.
    • Connect a fused jumper:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  DISCONNECT the fused jumper wire and CONNECT the blower motor relay. GO to  O11.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  11. O11 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR SPEED CONTROL POWER CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Blower Motor Speed Control.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the voltage greater than 11 volts? 

    Yes  CONNECT the blower motor speed control. GO to  O12.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  12. O12 CHECK FOR BLOWER MOTOR FUNCTIONALITY WITH A TEST LIGHT IN PLACE OF THE BLOWER MOTOR

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Blower Motor.
    • Connect:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Ignition ON.
    • Select panel mode with the blower motor on high.

    Does the test lamp illuminate? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new blower motor. Refer to Blower Motor .
    No  GO to  O13.
  13. O13 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Blower Motor Speed Control.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  O14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  14. O14 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR SPEED CONTROL GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  O15.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  15. O15 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR SPEED CONTROL COMMAND CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Disconnect: HVAC Module C228A.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  O16.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  16. O16 CHECK THE BLOWER MOTOR SPEED CONTROL COMMAND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new blower motor speed control. REFER to Climate Control - DATC . If the concern is still present, GO to  O17.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  17. O17 CHECK FOR CORRECT HVAC MODULE OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all HVAC module connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect the HVAC module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new HVAC module. Refer to Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) Module .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
