Locked Safety Belt Retractor Releasing
NOTE:
If the safety belt webbing does not extract from the safety belt retractor from the stowed position, this may be due to a normal condition which happens when the safety belt retracts at a high rate of speed. Follow these steps to release the safety belt.
Front row safety belt retractor
NOTE:
Typical front outboard safety belt retractor shown in illustration, other configurations similar.
NOTE:
To unlock the safety belt retractor, only a few millimeters of safety belt are necessary to retract back onto the safety belt retractor spool.
- 1.
Slowly lower the safety belt shoulder height adjuster allowing the safety belt to retract back onto the safety belt retractor spool. If the safety belt shoulder height adjuster is all the way down, proceed to step 3.
- 2.
Slowly extract the safety belt from the safety belt retractor. If the safety belt does not extract, proceed to the next step.

Slowly feed the safety belt slack back into the retractor to unlock it.
- 2.
Slowly extract the safety belt from the safety belt retractor. If the safety belt does not extract, proceed to the next step. If the safety belt does extract, proceed to step 8.

Remove the fastener and detach the safety belt anchor or safety belt anchor and pretensioner. REFER to the appropriate removal and installation procedure.

Slowly feed the safety belt slack back into the retractor to unlock it.
- 2.
Slowly extract the safety belt from the safety belt retractor. Proceed to the next step.

- If the safety belt does not extract, install a new safety belt retractor. Refer to the appropriate safety belt retractor removal and installation procedure.
- If the safety belt does extract, install all fasteners that were removed and tighten them to specification. REFER to the appropriate removal and installation procedure.
- 8.
Check the active restraint system for correct operation. Refer to: Safety Belt System .
Rear safety belt retractor
NOTE:
Typical rear outboard safety belt retractor shown in illustration, other configurations similar.
NOTE:
To unlock the safety belt retractor, only a few millimeters of safety belt are necessary to retract back onto the safety belt retractor spool.

- 1.NOTE: Compressing the backrest foam and/or reclining the rear seat backrest (if equipped) allows more slack of the safety belt webbing to be fed into the safety belt retractor.
Compress the backrest foam pad and recline the rear seat backrest (if equipped).
- 2.
Slowly feed the safety belt slack back into the retractor to unlock it. If the safety belt does not extract after carrying out this step, proceed to the next step.

Slowly feed the safety belt slack back into the retractor to unlock it.
- 2.
Slowly extract the safety belt from the safety belt retractor. If the safety belt does not extract, proceed to the next step. If the safety belt does extract, proceed to step 16.

Remove the fastener and detach the safety belt anchor or inflatable safety belt union. REFER to the appropriate removal and installation procedure.

Slowly feed the safety belt slack back into the retractor to unlock it.
- 2.
Extract the safety belt webbing from the safety belt retractor. Proceed to the next step.

- If the safety belt does not extract, install a new safety belt retractor. Refer to the appropriate safety belt retractor removal and installation procedure.
- If the safety belt does extract, install all fasteners that were removed and tighten them to specification. REFER to the appropriate removal and installation procedure.

Check the active restraint system for correct operation. Refer to: Safety Belt System .
