PINPOINT TEST E : The Heated Mirror Is Inoperative

E1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST SYSTEM

With the engine running, activate the rear window defrost.

Using an infrared temperature gun or equivalent, measure the temperature of the rear window glass for approximately 30 seconds, noting changes in temperature.

Does the temperature of the rear window glass rise?

Yes	GO to E2.
No	REFER to Glass, Frames and Mechanisms , Symptom Chart and diagnose the rear window defrost system.

E2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE HEATED EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRRORS

With the rear window defrost activated, using an infrared temperature gun or equivalent, measure the temperature of the RH and LH exterior rear view mirror glass for approximately 30 seconds, noting changes in temperature.

Does at least one heated mirror glass operate correctly?

Yes	GO to E4.
No	VERIFY that BJB fuse 50 (15A) is OK. If OK, GO to E3. If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible cause of the circuit short.

E3 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO BJB FUSE 50 (15A)

Verify BJB fuse 50 (15A) is installed.

Ignition ON.

With the engine running, activate the rear window defrost.

Measure:

Positive Lead	Measurement / Action	Negative Lead
Fuse 50 (15A)	Courtesy of FORD MOTOR COMPANY	Ground

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes	REPAIR circuit CRD17 (GY).
No	REPAIR circuit CRD06 (BN/YE).

E4 CHECK THE VOLTAGE TO THE INOPERATIVE HEATED EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR GLASS

Ignition OFF.

Disconnect: Inoperative LH or RH Heated Exterior Mirror.

Ignition ON.

With the engine running, activate the rear window defrost.

For inoperative LH heated mirror, measure:

Positive Lead	Measurement / Action	Negative Lead

Positive Lead	Measurement / Action	Negative Lead

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

Yes	GO to E5.
No	REPAIR the circuit.

E5 CHECK THE INOPERATIVE EXTERIOR REAR VIEW MIRROR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

Ignition OFF.

For inoperative LH heated mirror, measure:

Positive Lead	Measurement / Action	Negative Lead

For inoperative RH heated mirror, measure:

Positive Lead	Measurement / Action	Negative Lead

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

Yes

CHECK the LH or RH exterior mirror jumper harness between the vehicle harness and the exterior mirror motors for shorted circuits and damaged or pushed-out pins. If the jumper harness is not OK, REPAIR the jumper harness. If the jumper harness cannot be repaired, INSTALL a new LH or RH exterior mirror. Refer to Exterior Mirror . If the jumper harness is OK, INSTALL a new exterior mirror glass. Refer to Exterior Mirror Glass .

REPAIR the circuit.
