ISSUE

Some 2011-2016 Explorer/Taurus/Flex/MKT/MKS vehicles equipped with a 2.0L, 2.3L, 3.5L and/or 3.7L engines may exhibit a ting, pop, click and/or continuous tick noises from the front wheel area when accelerating from a stop, turning or when shifting between drive/reverse and/or reverse/drive. The noise may be caused by worn/damaged front halfshaft outer joints and/or friction between the front halfshaft and wheel hub

ACTION

Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Drive the vehicle slowly in circles with the steering turned all the way to the left and then to the right. Does the vehicle exhibit continuous clicking, popping or ticking noises while turning?
    1. Yes - replace the right side front halfshaft. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 205-04. Install a new thrust washer between the halfshaft and wheel hub when installing the new halfshaft. Repair is complete. (Figure 1)
    2. No - proceed to Step 2.

  2. Shift the vehicle between drive/reverse and reverse/drive and accelerate the vehicle from a stop. Does the vehicle exhibit a single ting, pop, or click noise from the front wheel area during the acceleration or when shifting between drive/reverse and/or reverse/drive?
    1. Yes - proceed to Step 3.
    2. No - this article does not apply. Refer to (WSM), Section 205-04 for normal diagnostics.
  3. Separate both front halfshafts from the wheel hub. Refer to WSM, Section 205-04.
    1. Removal of the halfshafts from the transmission or power transfer unit (PTU) is not required.
  4. Install a new thrust washer and reinstall the halfshafts in the wheel hub. Refer to WSM, Section 205-04. (Figure 1)
