ISSUE
Some 2012-2015 Explorer and 2013-2015 Taurus vehicles equipped with 2.0L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engines and built on or before 10/5/2014 may exhibit a lack of power and a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P2111, P2101 and/or P2112 stored in powertrain control module (PCM) memory, in ambient temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F).
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
- Does the condition occur in ambient temperatures below 0 °C (32 °F)?
- Yes - proceed to Step 2.
- No - this article does not apply. Refer to Powertrain Control/Emission Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual for normal diagnosis.
- Using Integrated Diagnostic System (IDS) service tool or equivalent, check for DTCs.
- Are DTC P2111, P2101 or P2112 stored in PCM memory and, in some instances, does the vehicle exhibit a lack of power?
- Yes - proceed to Step 4.
- No - this article does not apply. Refer to PC/ED manual for normal diagnosis.
- Remove and replace the charge air cooler (CAC) tube and screen assembly from the CAC to the throttle body with the revised part. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 303-12.
