PINPOINT TEST F : The Liftgate Latch Release Is Inoperative

  1. F1 CHECK FOR BCM DTC B12E8:11

    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the BCM self-test.

    Is DTC B12E8:11 present? 

    Yes  GO to  F2.
    No  VERIFY the BCM fuse 25 (15A) is OK. If not OK, REFER to the OEM ELECTRICAL WIRING DIAGRAM INTRODUCTION to identify the possible causes of the circuit short. If OK: For vehicles with a manual liftgate, GO to  F5. For vehicles with a power liftgate, GO to  F4.
  2. F2 REPEAT THE BCM SELF-TEST

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch C4216.
    • Ignition ON.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, clear the BCM DTCs.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the BCM self-test.

    Is DTC B12E8:11 still present? 

    Yes  GO to  F3.
    No  INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. Liftgate Release Switch 
  3. F3 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280C.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Is the resistance greater than 10, 000 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  F14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  4. F4 CHECK FOR LTM DTCs

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, carry out the LTM self-test.

    Are any DTCs present? 

    Yes  REFER to Body Closures .
    No  GO to  F5.
  5. F5 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH OUTPUT

    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, view the BCM PIDs.
    • Using a diagnostic scan tool, command the BCM LFTGATE_R_OS PID on.

    Does the liftgate latch release? 

    Yes  GO to  F6.
    No  If equipped with the police package, GO to  F6. If not equipped with the police package, GO to  F7.
  6. F6 VERIFY THE LIFTGATE RELEASE FUNCTION WITH THE IGNITION ON

    • Ignition ON.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • Press the liftgate release switch.

    Does the liftgate latch release? 

    Yes  The system is operating correctly. INFORM the customer of the correct operation of the liftgate latch release for vehicles equipped with the police package.
    No  GO to  F7.
  7. F7 BYPASS THE EXTERIOR LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: Liftgate Release Switch C4216.
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
      NOTE: For police vehicles, the ignition needs to in the RUN mode.
    • Connect and then remove a fused jumper wire:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Does the liftgate release? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new liftgate release switch. REFER to Liftgate Release Switch .
    No  GO to  F8.
  8. F8 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

      NOTE: For police vehicles, the ignition needs to in the RUN mode.
    • Connect and then remove a fused jumper wire:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

      Ground

    Does the liftgate latch release? 

    Yes  REPAIR the liftgate release switch ground circuit.
    No  GO to  F9.
  9. F9 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE SWITCH INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect: BCM C2280C.
    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  F14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  10. F10 CHECK FOR BCM LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT

    • Disconnect: Liftgate Latch (manual liftgate) or LTM C4174B (power liftgate).
    • Unlock the doors using the door lock control switch.
    • Connect a test lamp:

      Manual Liftgate 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    • Monitor the test lamp while pressing and releasing the exterior liftgate release switch.

    Does the test lamp momentarily illuminate? 

    Yes  For a manual liftgate, GO to  F12. For a power liftgate, GO to  F13.
    No  GO to  F11.
  11. F11 CHECK THE LIFTGATE RELEASE OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Disconnect: BCM C2280D.
    • Measure:

      Manual Liftgate 

      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  GO to  F14.
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  12. F12 CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

    • Measure:
      Positive Lead Measurement / Action Negative Lead

    Is the resistance less than 3 ohms? 

    Yes  INSTALL a new liftgate latch. Liftgate Latch - Manual .
    No  REPAIR the circuit.
  13. F13 CHECK FOR CORRECT LTM OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all LTM connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all LTM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new LTM. REFER to Body Closures .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
  14. F14 CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM OPERATION

    • Ignition OFF.
    • Disconnect and inspect all BCM connectors.
    • Repair:
      • corrosion (install new connector or terminals - clean module pins)
      • damaged or bent pins - install new terminals/pins
      • pushed-out pins - install new pins as necessary
    • Reconnect all BCM connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.
    • Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

    Is the concern still present? 

    Yes  CHECK OASIS for any applicable TSBs. If a TSB exists for this concern, DISCONTINUE this test and FOLLOW TSB instructions. If no TSBs address this concern, INSTALL a new BCM. REFER to Multifunction Electronic Modules .
    No  The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by module connections. ADDRESS the root cause of any connector or pin issues.
