Other Brake Conditions

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION
BRAKES CHATTER OR VIBRATION 1. Disc brake rotor has excessive thickness variation. 1. Isolate condition as rear or front. Reface or replace brake rotors as necessary.
2. Uneven tire wear/wheel - tire imbalance. 2. Inspect tires & wheels. Balance wheel weights.
BRAKES DRAG (FRONT OR ALL) 1. Contaminated brake fluid. 1. Check for swollen seals. Replace all system components containing rubber.
2. Binding caliper pins or bushings. 2. Replace pins and bushings
3. Binding master cylinder (not fully returning). 3. Inspect and Replace master cylinder as necessary.
4. Binding brake pedal. 4. Replace brake pedal/bushings.
5. Brake lamp switch not adjusted properly and mounting bracket is bent. 5. Straighten mounting bracket and replace brake lamp switch, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
BRAKES DRAG (REAR ONLY) 1. Parking brake cables binding or froze up. 1. Check cable routing. Replace cables as necessary.
2. Parking brake cable return spring not returning shoes. 2. Replace cables as necessary.
3. Obstruction inside the center console preventing full return of the parking brake cables. 3. Remove console and remove obstruction.
4. Operator error. 4. Describe operation of electric park brake
5. Electric park brake does not release. 5. Refer to PARKING BRAKE  .
6. Electric Parking Brake (EPB) caliper actuators (one or both) are not released. Or the EPB module or EPB actuators are not responding. 6. EPB module will set codes.
BRAKES GRAB 1. Contaminated brake pad/shoe linings. 1. Inspect and clean, or replace shoes/pads and rotors. Repair source of contamination.
2. Improper power brake booster assist. 2. Refer to Power Brake Booster in this article.
3. Damaged wheel or tire. Wheel - tire imbalance. 3. Inspect wheels and tires. Balance wheel weights.
EXCESSIVE PEDAL EFFORT 1. Obstruction of brake pedal. 1. Inspect, remove or move obstruction.
2. Low power brake booster assist. 2. Refer to Power Brake Booster in this article.
3. Glazed brake linings. 3. Reface or replace brake rotors as necessary. Replace brake shoes/pads.
4. Brake shoe/pad lining transfer to brake rotor. 4. Reface or replace brake rotors as necessary. Replace brake shoes/pads.
EXCESSIVE PEDAL EFFORT (HARD PEDAL - CAN'T SKID WHEELS) 1. Power brake booster runout (vacuum assist). 1. Check booster vacuum hose and engine tune for adequate vacuum supply. Refer to Power Brake Booster.
EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL (VEHICLE STOPS OK) 1. Air in brake lines. 1. Bleed brakes.
2. Brake fluid low in reservoir. 2. Fill reservoir. Check entire system for leaks; repair or replace as required.
EXCESSIVE PEDAL TRAVEL (ONE FRONT WHEEL LOCKS UP DURING HARD BRAKING) 1. One of the two hydraulic circuits is malfunctioning. 1. Inspect system for leaks. Check master cylinder for internal malfunction.
PEDAL PULSATES/SURGES DURING BRAKING 1. Disc brake rotor has excessive thickness variation. 1. Isolate condition as rear or front. Reface or replace brake rotors as necessary.
2. Worn or damaged tires. 2. Inspect tires and wheels.
3. Loose wheel bearings. 3. Inspect wheel bearings.
4. Loose calipers. 4. Inspect calipers.
5. Wheel - Tire imbalance. 5. Balance wheel weights.
PEDAL IS SPONGY 1. Air in brake lines. 1. Bleed brakes.
2. Power brake booster runout (vacuum assist). 2. Check booster vacuum hose and engine tune for adequate vacuum supply. Refer to Power Brake Booster diagnosis and testing.
3. ABS Electric Vacuum Pump (EVP) not functioning. 3. Refer to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) (SERVICE INFORMATION) and appropriate diagnostic information.
PREMATURE REAR WHEEL LOCKUP 1. Contaminated brake linings. 1. Inspect and clean, or replace pads. Repair source of contamination.
2. Anti-lock brake system function issue. 2. Refer to the ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) (SERVICE INFORMATION) and appropriate diagnostic information.
STOP LAMPS STAY ON 1. Stop/Brake lamp switch out of adjustment. 1. Replace stop lamp switch, refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
2. Brake pedal binding. 2. Inspect and replace as necessary.
3. Obstruction in pedal linkage. 3. Remove obstruction.
4. Power brake booster not allowing pedal to return completely. 4. Replace power brake booster.
VEHICLE PULLS TO RIGHT OR LEFT ON BRAKING 1. Frozen brake caliper piston. 1. Replace frozen piston or caliper. Bleed brakes.
2. Contaminated brake shoe/pad lining (most likely front lining). 2. Inspect and clean, or replace pads. Repair source of contamination.
3. Pinched brake lines. 3. Replace pinched line.
4. Leaking piston seal. 4. Replace piston seal or brake caliper.
5. Suspension problem. 5. Refer to FRONT SUSPENSION & WHEEL ALIGNMENT or REAR SUSPENSION the Suspension section.
6. Worn or damaged tires. 6. Inspect tires and wheels.
7. Wheel - Tire imbalance. 7. Balance wheel weights.
PARKING BRAKE - EXCESSIVE LEVER/HANDLE TRAVEL 1. Broke cable. 1. Replace broken cable.
2. Binding cable. 2. Replace binding cable.
3. Damaged lever at rear brake caliper. 3. Replace rear brake caliper.
4. Parking brake shoes/pads out of adjustment. 4. Adjust parking brake shoes/pads.
5. Binding/frozen rear brake caliper piston. 5. Replace rear brake caliper.
