Differential Disassembly

NOTE:

The differential unit can be placed on tool (special tool #6888, Installer, Seal) as a stable holding fixture.

  1. Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. Place the transmission on a suitable clean work surface.
  3. Remove the bellhousing from the transmission. Refer to BELLHOUSING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  4. Separate the differential unit (1) from the transmission.

  5. Remove the bolts (2) holding the ring gear (1) to the differential housing.

  6. Separate the ring gear (1) from the differential unit (2).

  7. Separate the two halves (1 and 2) of the differential housing to gain access to the pinion shaft.

  8. Remove the differential side gear (1) and thrust washer (2) from the differential housing (3).

  9. Using a suitable pencil magnet, remove the lock-pin (1) holding the pinion shaft in the differential housing (2).

  10. Slide the pinion shaft (4) outward and remove the conical thrust washer (1) from behind the pinion gear (2).

  11. Slide the pinion shaft (2) outward and remove the pinion gear 1 (1).

  12. Slide the pinion shaft (2) outward and remove the pinion gear 2 (1).

  13. Slide the pinion shaft (2) outward and remove the conical thrust washer (1) from behind the pinion gear 2.
  14. Remove the pinion shaft (2) from the differential housing.

  15. Remove the differential side gear (1) and thrust washer (2) from the differential housing (3).
