Following is a quick reference diagnostic table to help when diagnosing and testing the power liftgate chime.

SYMPTOM DRIVEN POWER LIFTGATE CHIME DIAGNOSIS

CONDITION POSSIBLE CAUSES CORRECTION
LIFTGATE CHIME DOES NOT EMIT SOUND OR SOUNDS DISTORTED DURING POWER OPEN/POWER CLOSE CYCLES
  1. Chime can be turned off in the radio settings.
  1. Verify the state of this setting.
  1. Check for active Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), search Power Liftgate Module (PLGM) DTCs for code B195F-12.
  1. Follow directions in B195F-12 POWER LIFTGATE CHIME CONTROL - CIRCUIT SHORT TO BATTERY in the MODULE, POWER LIFTGATE (PLGM) DTC - Based Diagnostics information .
  1. Poor connection between chime and harness.
  1. Follow connector checking procedure below.
  1. Lost or poor connection between PLGM and chime.
  1. Probe chime connector with a digital multimeter.
  1. Chime has internal damage.
  1. Run a replacement test.

1.  CHECK THE LIFTGATE CHIME FOR EMITTING SOUND

  1. On some models the chime that is emitted during a "Customer Activated Liftgate Commanded Movement" can be turned off through the settings in the Radio. Verify the state of this setting before proceeding to ensure accurate Diagnostics of the Chime Device.
  2. Using the Scan Tool, activate the Power Liftgate Chime Function.

2.  CHECK FOR ACTIVE DTCs

  1. Turn the ignition on.
  2. With the scan tool, generate and record the Vehicle Scan Report.
  3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
  4. Turn the ignition off.
  5. Wait for 10 seconds.
  6. Turn the ignition on and start the engine.
  7. Operate the vehicle in the conditions that set this DTC.
  8. With the scan tool, read PLGM DTCs.

3.  CHECK THE POWER LIFTGATE CHIME HARNESS CONNECTION

  1. Disconnect the power liftgate chime from the harness.
  2. Reconnect the chime to the harness. Make sure the connector is fully seated.
  3. Activate the chime. If the chime does not sound, perform the following steps:
  4. Disconnect the power liftgate chime from the harness.
  5. Check the harness and chime connector and male and female terminals for the following conditions:
    • Proper connector installation.
    • Apparently damaged connectors lock.
    • Corrosion.
    • Water contact signs.
    • If the weather proof protection is damaged (If equipped).
    • Bent terminals.
    • Overheating due to poor connection (terminal should be colorless due to overheat).
    • Terminals that have been damaged due to being pushed.
    • Perform a terminal drag test on each terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
  6. Repair any damage found on step 5.
  7. Reconnect the chime to the harness. Make sure the connector is fully seated.
  8. With the scan tool, erase all DTCs.
  9. Operated the vehicle in the conditions that set this DTC.
  10. With the scan tool, read the PLGM DTCs.

4.  CHECK THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE POWER LIFTGATE MODULE AND THE CHIME

  1. Probe the chime connector with a digital multimeter.
  2. Using the scan tool, activate the Power Liftgate Chime Function.
  3. If the connection is good, voltage changes should be detected.

5.  CHECK FOR CHIME INTERNAL DAMAGE

  1. Turn the ignition off.
  2. Replace the power liftgate chime with a faultless one (replacement for test).
  3. Turn ignition on.
  4. Using the scan tool, activate the Power Liftgate Chime Function.
  5. Replacement chime should emit sound.
