The front wiper linkage module is secured within the cowl plenum panel beneath the cowl plenum cover/grille panel. The ends of the wiper pivot shafts protrude through dedicated openings in the cowl plenum cover/grille panel to drive the wiper arms and blades and are the only visible components of the front wiper linkage module.
When replacing wiper arms, the motor should be cycled on and off so that the motor is in the parked position prior to installing the wiper arms.
The front wiper linkage module consists of the following components:
- Bracket - The front wiper linkage module bracket (2) consists of the unit that supports the wiper motor and transmission unit as well as the wiper pivot brackets at each end where the two wiper pivots (4) are secured. The front wiper linkage module bracket is secured within the cowl plenum by two screws through rubber insulators (3) and a rubber locator (6).
- Crank Arm - The front wiper motor crank arm is a stamped steel unit with a slotted hole on the driven end that is secured to the wiper motor output shaft with a nut and a double ball stud secured to the drive end.
- Linkage - Two stamped steel links (1) connect the wiper motor to the two wiper pivot crank arms. Both drive links have plastic socket-type bushings on each end. The plastic socket-type bushings on each end of the drive links are snapped over the double ball studs. The shorter link's bushings snap onto the ball stud of the crank arm and the rear ball stud of the right pivot crank arm. The longer link's bushings snap onto the ball studs on the front side of both pivot crank arms.
- Motor - The front wiper motor (7) is secured through stanchions, integral to the wiper motor, to the linkage module bracket by two screws. The two-speed permanent magnet wiper motor features an integral transmission, an internal park switch, and an internal automatic resetting circuit breaker. An integral connector receptacle (5) connects the motor to the vehicle electrical system.
- Pivots - The two front wiper pivots (4) are secured to the ends of the wiper module bracket. The crank arms that extend from each pivot shaft have ball studs that engage the bushings of the drive links. The end of each pivot shaft where the wiper arms will be fastened is tapered and serrated with a threaded stud formation at the tip.
The front wiper linkage module cannot be adjusted or repaired. If any component of the module is ineffective or damaged, the entire front wiper linkage module unit must be replaced.
