The compressor (1) is a variable-displacement design with a 185cc maximum displacement. It compresses the low-pressure refrigerant into a high-pressure, high-temperature gas, circulating it through the system.

A label identifying the type of refrigerant and refrigerant oil used in the system is located on each A/C compressor.

Compressors are lubricated and pre-filled with refrigerant oil, which is circulated throughout the system with the refrigerant

NOTE:

PAG refrigerant oil is more hygroscopic than mineral oil and will absorb any moisture it comes into contact with, even moisture in the air. When saturated PAG oil is combined with refrigerant, it can cause a corrosive acid.

All other A/C system components (condenser/receiver-drier, evaporator, Thermal Expansion Valve (TXV)) are shipped without oil and are capped to prevent moist outside air contamination.

CAUTION:

Be certain to adjust the refrigerant system oil level when replacing an A/C compressor. Failure to properly adjust the refrigerant oil level can prevent the A/C system from operating as designed and can cause serious A/C compressor damage.

The A/C compressor cannot be repaired and must be replaced if inoperative or damaged. The compressor clutch, pulley and bearing assembly, and clutch field coil are available for service.

If an internal failure of the A/C compressor has occurred and the A/C compressor is being replaced, the A/C receiver/drier filter/desiccant must also be replaced, which is serviceable separately from the condenser. Refer to DRIER, A/C RECEIVER, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
