Removal And Installation: Removal

WARNING:

To avoid serious or fatal injury on vehicles equipped with airbags, disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) before attempting any steering wheel, steering column, airbag, seat belt tensioner, impact sensor or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the SRS. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment.

  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the steering column opening cover Refer to COVER, STEERING COLUMN OPENING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .

  3. Locate the brake pedal position sensor (3) on the brake pedal support bracket (4) under the instrument panel to the right of the steering column shaft (1).
  4. Disconnect the body wire harness connector (2) from the sensor.
  5. This sensor is indexed. Depress the tabs and then rotate the sensor 1/4 turn counter clockwise.
  6. After rotation, the sensor becomes unlocked from the base and can now be removed by pulling straight rearward.
