Transmission - Front Wheel Drive (FWD): Removal
- 1.
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to Jacking and Lifting , Lifting Points.
- 2.
Remove the ACL assembly. REFER to Intake Air Distribution and Filtering .
- 3.
Remove the battery tray. REFER to Battery, Mounting and Cables .
- 4.
Remove the upper intake manifold. For 3.5L Ti-VCT refer to ENGINE - 3.5L GTDI .
- 6.
Disconnect the selector lever cable from the selector lever cable bracket and detach the wiring harness pin-type retainer.
- 12.
Disconnect the transmission electrical connector and remove the wiring harness retainer from the main control cover stud bolt.
- 13.
Remove the 4 top torque converter housing bolts.
NOTE:
The starter motor is shown removed for clarity.
- 17.
Remove the front subframe. REFER to Uni-Body, Subframe and Mounting System .- Position the stabilizer bar aside.
- 20.
Using 100-001 T50T-100-A and 205-832 remove the LH halfshaft from the transmission and position it aside.
NOTE:
Do not allow the halfshaft to over angle or hang from the outer CV joint. Always support the free end of the halfshaft or damage can occur.
- 22.
Inspect the LH halfshaft hub for wear or damage and install a new halfshaft if necessary.- 1.
Inspect the seal surface.
- 2.
Inspect the bearing surface. If this surface is damaged, inspect the halfshaft bushing for damage.
- 3.
Inspect the differential side gear splines.
- 1.
- 23.
Remove the roll-restrictor bolts and the roll-restrictor bracket.
NOTE:
Do not rotate the roll restrictor with the clevis bolts tight or damage to the roll restrictor can occur.
- 24.
Remove the 2 intermediate shaft bracket nuts, pull the RH halfshaft from the transmission and position it aside.
NOTE:
Do not allow the halfshaft to over angle or hang from the outer CV joint. Always support the free end of the halfshaft or damage can occur.
- 27.
Remove the secondary latches from the transmission fluid cooler tubes at the transmission fluid cooler thermal bypass valve.
- 28.
Using 307-569, disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes from the transmission fluid cooler thermal bypass valve.
- 30.
Lower the transmission far enough for the transmission support insulator to clear the transmission mount studs.
- 34.
Remove and discard the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube bolts.
NOTE:
It is only necessary to remove the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes if the transmission is being overhauled or replaced. If the transmission is being removed for access to other components only, it is not necessary to remove the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes.
- 35.
Remove the nuts, pull the transmission fluid cooler thermal bypass valve and the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes straight up and remove the assembly from the transmission.
- 36.
Inspect the transmission case to be sure that the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube seals and backing rings were removed with the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tubes and are not stuck in the transmission case. If the transmission mounted transmission fluid cooler tube seals or backing rings are stuck in the transmission case, remove the seals and backing rings.
- 37.
If the transmission is to be overhauled or if installing a new or re-manufactured transmission, carry out transmission fluid cooler backflushing and cleaning. REFER to Transaxle Transmission Cooling .
