PINPOINT TEST B : Incorrect Fuel Gauge Indication: Notes
Diagnostic Overview
Refer to Instrument Cluster for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
The fuel gauge uses inputs from the fuel pump assembly and the fuel level sensor to provide the fuel level indication. For information on the fuel gauge and fuel level sender, REFER to DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , Fuel Gauge and DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION , Fuel Level Sender.
NOTE:
A slight fluctuation in the fuel gauge needle is normal on the optional (video display) IPC. Do not fault the IPC for this concern.
IPC DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
| DTC | Description | Fault Trigger Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| P0460:11 | Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit: Circuit Short to Ground | A continuous and on-demand DTC that sets in the IPC if the IPC detects that the fuel pump assembly is out of range on the fuel level input circuit with a short to ground for 33 seconds or longer. The IPC defaults the fuel gauge to empty (E), once the IPC detects a fault and sets DTC P0460:11. |
| P0460:13 | Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit: Circuit Open | A continuous and on-demand DTC that sets in the IPC if the IPC detects that the fuel pump assembly is out of range on the fuel level input circuit with an open or short to voltage for 33 seconds or longer. The IPC defaults the fuel gauge to empty (E), once the IPC detects a fault and sets DTC P0460:13. |
| P1243:06 | Second Fuel Pump Fault or Ground Fault: Algorithm Based Failure |
NOTE:
Normal operation of the fuel delivery system allows the fuel sensor side of the fuel tank (the side opposite of the fuel filler hose) to have less fuel than the side with the fuel pump assembly (side with the fuel filler hose). Sets when the IPC detects a low fuel condition on the fuel pump module side (active side) of the fuel tank before the fuel level sensor (passive side) indicates empty. DTC P1243:06 indicates a fuel transfer concern with the fuel transfer tube or the jet pump (part of the fuel pump module). |
| P1346:11 | Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit: Circuit Short to Ground | A continuous and on-demand DTC that sets in the IPC if the IPC detects that the fuel level sensor is out of range on the fuel level input circuit with a short to ground for 33 seconds or longer. The IPC defaults the fuel gauge to empty (E), once the IPC detects a fault and sets DTC P1346:11. |
| P1346:13 | Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit: Circuit Open | A continuous and on-demand DTC that sets in the IPC if the IPC detects that the fuel level sensor is out of range on the fuel level input circuit with an open or short to voltage for 33 seconds or longer. The IPC defaults the fuel gauge to empty (E), once the IPC detects a fault and sets DTC P1346:13. |
PCM DTC Fault Trigger Conditions
| DTC | Description | Fault Trigger Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| P0460 | Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit | Sets when the PCM determines the value of the fuel level input signal is stuck, that the fuel level input signal does not change or does not correspond with the calculated fuel usage. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P0461 | Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance | Sets when the PCM determines the fuel level input signal repeatedly moves in and out of range, exceeding the minimum or maximum allowable calibrated parameters for a specified fuel fill percentage in the fuel tank. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P0462 | Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit Low | Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects a short to ground on the fuel pump assembly signal circuit based on the messaged input received from the IPC. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P0463 | Fuel Level Sensor A Circuit High | Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects an open or a short to voltage on the fuel pump assembly signal circuit based on the messaged input received from the IPC. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P2065 | Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit | Sets when the PCM determines the value of the fuel level sensor input signal is stuck, that the fuel level input signal does not change or does not correspond with the calculated fuel usage. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P2066 | Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit Range/Performance | Sets when the PCM determines the fuel level sensor input signal repeatedly moves in and out of range, exceeding the minimum or maximum allowable calibrated parameters for a specified fuel fill percentage in the fuel tank. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P2067 | Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit Low | Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects a short to ground on the fuel level sensor signal circuit based on the messaged input received from the IPC. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
| P2068 | Fuel Level Sensor B Circuit High | Sets in the PCM when the PCM detects an open or short to voltage on the fuel level sensor signal circuit on the messaged input received from the IPC. Follow the pinpoint test using the DTCs set in the IPC. |
Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks
Inspect the fuel tank for signs of damage that can affect the float operation inside the tank. Inspect the fuel gauge needle on the base IPC or the fuel gauge display area of the LH display screen on the optional IPC.
